Description
The Albumin/Globulin (A/G) Ratio is a calculated lab value comparing albumin (the main protein made by the liver) to globulins (a group of proteins that includes antibodies and other immune/transport proteins). It helps summarize whether the balance of liver-produced protein vs immune-related proteins looks typical.
Why it matters
An A/G ratio is not a stand-alone diagnosis, but it can provide a useful clue when interpreted alongside total protein, albumin, globulin, liver enzymes, kidney markers, and clinical history.
What low vs high can suggest (general education)
Lower A/G ratio can reflect lower albumin (reduced liver synthesis, malnutrition, kidney protein loss) and/or higher globulins (chronic inflammation, infection, autoimmune patterns).
Higher A/G ratio is less common and can be seen when globulins are low (some immune deficiencies) or albumin is relatively high (dehydration/hemoconcentration).
Practical interpretation
Because many common situations (hydration status, acute illness) can shift these proteins, repeating an abnormal ratio and looking at the individual components (albumin and globulin) is often more informative than the ratio alone.
